Question of the Weekend

Umbrellas

My life has been pretty intense lately so much so that I'm trying to make everything possible a little less intense.  I logged into my Netflix account this week to update my movies for the weekend and realized all the movies in my queue were way too intense for the way I've been feeling lately.  I don't need drama or mystery.  I don't need thrillers that will keep me up at night.  I need lighthearted.  I need laughter.  I need romance.  I need something that doesn't make my head ache.  I need something I don't have to think about.  I need something I can just sit back and enjoy.  But ya know what?  I couldn't come up with anything.  I was totally blank and Netflix's recommendations just didn't seem quite right.

I need your help.  What was the last lighthearted movie you saw that you really, really loved?  What was the last comedy that made you laugh so hard you nearly peed your pants?  What was the last movie that left you swooning?  What was the last movie you sat back on the couch and soaked up not because it said something important or wanted to change the world's thinking but simply because it was enjoyable?  It can be old.  It can be new.  It can be a box office smash or a small indy.  It can be classic or modern.  I don't care.  I need to know because my Netflix queue is in need of a serious makeover...at least for the summer...or until my life becomes a little less intense.

The prize winner of Defiance, Ohio. It has Woody Harrelson and Julianne Moore and is based upon a true story.

What a great list of movies! In addition, I recommend Charade (Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant), Sabrina (both old and new versions) and To Catch a Thief (I know it's not technically a chick flick, but I love Cary Grant and the fireworks scene so makes me wish I were rich and beautiful just like Grace Kelly!)

Dear Michelle,

I've been in these place & I recommend that you put "Jump Tomorrow" into your queue.

xx, JP

Dear Michelle,
for laughs to make your heart light:
'Connie and Carla'
to smile, to swoon, and to fall in love:
'Spanglish'
for ease and nostalgia:
'Shag'
for raw hilarity:
'The Big Lebowski'
and for my greatest love of all:
'Moonstruck'
Movies cure all ails.
Sincerely, HP

I think I'm a tough audience when it comes to humor because I don't laugh easily. Albert Brooks often does it for me. "Lost in America" is one of my all-time favorite films and I LOVE "Mother" (with Debbie Reynolds). "Sideways" always makes us laugh (we've watched it several times). And as silly as it is, so does Jim Carrey's "Liar, Liar." Outside of movies, Kathy Griffin (who people either love or hate--we love her) always gets me chuckling...either her stand-up specials or "My Life on the D-List."

Princess Bride - never fails.

looks like you have quite a list but I just saw the devil wears prada and couldn't stop laughing.
once made my heart sing.
music and lyrics was one I watched when I needed what you are seeking in this moment and it totally worked.
something's gotta give is another go to when I need sweetness and light.

xoxo

I recently watched "Garden State" and found it moving, funny, easy on the eye, clever - but not too clever.

If you like the books of Douglas Coupland, then this is like a Coupland novel on screen.

Grace and peace

Have you ever seen any of the old Marilyn Monroe movies? Some Like it Hot is hilarious! Or How to Marry a Millionaire. I understand the need for light-heartedness, too. Sometimes all the self-reflection leads our brain into overload...we need fun, fun, and more fun! Enjoy!

I would recommend digging out some oldies for a laugh:
Bridget Jones'Diary
The Princess Bride
Plunkett and McLean (sp?)
The Full Monty
Muriel's Wedding
Shakespeare in Love

If you need to laugh and cry at the same time:
Steel Magnolias ("laughter through tears is my favorite emotion")
Love Actually
Four Weddings and a Funeral

Or just to be transported to a far away land and time for a few hours:
Out of Africa
The English Patient

When my family has campy movie night Ferris Buehler's Day Off never misses a beat.

I am reading your blog today for the first time. I'm a bit late in giving you an answer to the movie question. I don't go out and see movies often, but the last one I did see that was funny and sweet also had Hugh (hubba hubba) Grant in it along with Drew Barrymore. It was Music and Lyrics. I really liked it. Check it out!

Film for laughs and mild drama: You Can't Take it With You This is a 1938 Frank Capra blockbuster that swept the oscars at the Academy Awards. Uplifting and warm hearted. Jimmy Stewart.

Wow...I'm copying this amazing list and going straight to Netflix myself. So many I've seen, but forgot how much I liked them.
